A foto first.
09 January 2008Daniel turned up with a bunch of fotos from his new camera - and this was his first shot: Vinicius and Monstrinho.
As Lindsay said earlier, celebrate a first: no words can say it better.
Suffering from almost terminal exhaustion I am using a past article for today. The time I save will be spent on getting this blog layout in shape.
Am I really saying I have too many commitments to produce a blog this week?
?
Commitments!
It is just so easy to get trapped in the office, and THINK you are living your life. Today, as soon as I finished this article, I went for a walk along Copacabana Beach. Late afternoon, perfect weather, spectacular view, people everywhere laughing, playing - and I thought: What was I doing sitting at a desk writing this? Such a perfect day and I didn't live it. I need to read some of my own articles. I could have written this in the evening. [Except the boys would be home, and getting anything done with them around is like trying to brush your teeth while standing on your head and wearing a baseball mitt.]
The best way to avoid living your life is to have commitments. So, make a list of them. Go right ahead, write them down on paper. And then take a hard close look at them. How many did YOU put in your life yourself? And why? No... the REAL reason why! Which means, exactly what do you want in return for what you are doing? Nothing? Try again. Do this interesting little experiment: write down your first answer. Now, underneath that, write down another reason you feel you are 'trapped' with this commitment. Now, underneath that, write yet another reason.
Keep going until you have at least 10 reasons listed, one under the other. Interesting? It's like peeling layers from an onion. The further your list goes down, the deeper you get to the true reason.
And that reason may be a surprise, maybe even a jolt. But it holds a gift for you - the truth can set you free.
Many times we are trapped in commitments through feelings of guilt others impose on us. We are 'selfish' if we dare abandon them. But keep this key fact in mind: if you want to make others happy, YOU need to be happy first. A happy person is just the most wonderful companion to be with. To realise your own happiness is simply the most wonderful gift you can give your family, your friends - the universe.
Commitments? Blah. You're on your death bed... your last words... "Wait, God - don't take me yet. I haven't turned the roast."
Commitments... go flush! them along with 'intentions'.
Perspective. Go find it, but be careful. Perspective is a dangerous thing - it will allow you to live a wonderful life. And who wants that, right?
