Don't chase your tail.
04 January 2008It has been a week to remember...
I had a one-off opportunity to use a computer for a whole three days, so took the chance to redesign the site. Hopefully this new model has a bit more life, is easier to navigate, simpler in concept. Also is a better design to incorporate google ads etc - Daniel's income.
Was rather stressful, though, as my eye was always on the clock - yep, life seeping away... - and I had no software so had to do most of it in the file manager. That's always a challenge.
Plus what I know about programming could be covered in a sneeze - but again - and again and again - don't let not being prepared stop you! GET STARTED. That attracts its own energy, as I have demonstrated in the last month.
The steel arrived to start construction on the first bathroom - arrived a week ago, actually, but since I had no camera, had to rely on a passerby taking a few shots, then wait until he got around to emailing them. Those fotos are up now, Blog 19 December and thank you again Greg for getting that project off to a start.
Lindsay, who has the honor of being our first patron, is still waiting patiently for the fotos to appear on his page. We have taken the kids shopping now three times on his donation. The last time we managed to drag along a tourist, a Kiwi of all things! and she promised to go straight to a Lan House and email them. Still waiting, but I have just zapped off a reminder so am hopeful we will get them in a day or so. Thanks, Lindsay, for your patience. Being an Aussie yourself, you will know all about damn Kiwis....
And something totally unexpected, magical and cosmic happened - Free Willy in Canada provided us with a digital camera! It is in Daniel's hands right now, and he is going up tonight to the community to shoot himself silly. Willy, what can I say, THAT has solved one huge technical headache!! God what a relief.
Can't guarantee the quality of the first fotos, as Daniel is Daniel. Haha. He will shoot what he wants, and when he wants, and where he wants, and how he wants. Then later we will have a big fight about responsibility and so forth... and he will throw all my words back at me and nothing will change, as ever.
Here is a perfect example. I am away from home three days, working like crazy to upgrade the site. My absence reminds me not to take him for granted, so I send him a message, and get a classic Daniel response:
PAI: I know it's been a while since I said this, but I love you.
DANIEL: Has been a short time since i had sed this but im broke
Feel free to adopt him...
Finally, I should get around to the title.
In an earlier blog I mentioned that December was our first month, and in that time I planned to see just how to put it all together. Lessons have been learnt, site improved, onwards and upwards.
I said that in January I planned to double our traffic each day, for the month. That is our goal, anyway. We start from our present position of 100 visitors a day.
Now, when one sets a goal like this, one must be very careful not to fall for the trap of chasing your tail, with all its disastrous consequences.
Jan 01: hits = 100.
Jan 02: we want to get 200.
Jan 03: we should be at 400.
Jan 04: right up there at 800.
Now, what happens if on Jan 02 we only get to 120 - a whole 80 hits short? Now we have to get 280 hits on Jan 03 to stay on target, right?
Wrong! VERY wrong. That's when you start chasing your tail, and it all falls apart.
Success comes like this: OK, on Jan 02 I only managed to reach 120. So... now my goal for Jan 03 becomes... 240 - and NOT 400. If you follow THIS model you WILL get there and you WILL be successful because it is ALL positive.
Start chasing the 'lost' hits and you'll end up with the Lost Boys...
Remember to live the journey, make the adventure fun. It's life that's happening here, don't lose track of that! I know many young people - mid to late twenties - who are already quite wealthy [oops haven't done that topic yet, have I...] and they spend six days a week, 12 to 15 hours a day at the office chasing an extra buck. By the time they wake up, their youth will be gone...
Again Willy, thank you.
