The reason the poor need help is that they are not productive enough to earn sufficient to sustain themselves.
20 December 2007I put up today's title to make something VERY clear. I have said already several times on this site that Project Palhaco does NOT create dependency. There is a page where you can generously donate a food package, but understand what this is about.
These people have little education, fewer skills, no dreams to mention - and a houseful of kids. They simply, at the moment, cannot step out of the rut. Food parcels help more than you can imagine, while we put things in place for them to increase their income and improve their situations.
This is where our problem solving has to go... get them up and functioning, not scrabbling around for food. God that costs me so much time and energy at the moment - why on earth did I open my mouth and promise Xmas? AAAHH!!!
As for if it is even worth the effort...
Ask me tomorrow, today I'm scared of my answer.
And now for something totally unconnected... kinda. About a month after I took Daniel off the street - well, to see the TRUTH in that situation, go read Blog 23 December - I was cleaning his room when I really extended myself and also cleaned under his bed. What a shock. I stumbled upon a HUGE stockpile of food. Every day he had been squirreling food there... in case one day he woke up and the fridge was empty. It took literally months for him to feel secure enough to stop hiding food against future hunger. Karen in her email - Blog 17 December - had a similar awakening.
As for this damn BBQ - sheeesh. What drives me on is this - we are NOT "doing something nice for poor people"!
It runs much deeper than this.
It's one important step to help me change their lives over the next year.
It's concrete, measurable, deadlined. If a project is going to be successful, it needs to be these things. Not "I'm gonna be nice and help the poor" but "I'm going to reduce the cavities in this community by 80%" or "We will plant 200 trees in the next two months". It's quantitative, concrete, measurable, observable: and do-able. Although it doesn't have to be do-able, remember. If all these meditation and manifestation gurus are correct, ask for MUCH more than you can manage yourself... and let the good ole Universe dump it in your lap.
Well, I am meditating and dreaming and holding-it-in-the-forefront-of-my-mind and focussing and believing and trusting...
As for measurable and deadlined: four days to the BBQ. So far we have raised $4.00

10 steps to planning a successful project.
1. Start your business on the side Keep your day job. Build your dream business while you still have the security of a paycheck. When your business reaches critical mass, you can move over to full time. 2. Negotiate flexible working hours As your dream grows, you will need the freedom to respond to many different needs. If you can negotiate flexible start/finish times with your employer, even under the guise of avoiding peak hour traffic, the reward is enormous. Better still if you are able to work from home, at least part of each week. But remember, your karma dictates that you spend a solid 40 hours [or whatevr you negotiated] around your paycheck-job. 3. Employ an assistantThere can be a lot of legwork in launching a business. An assistant can move many boring mountains. You may think of using a family member or relative in this role, if they are competent, to help short term manage the cost. 4. Switch to a part-time job You believe, of course, that eventually your dream business will pay well. In the short term, to hasten its growth, you may consider living a little less grandly while you build build build. 5. Use a nest egg How much savings do you have? How long can you survive on them, as you build? Six months? A year? If you come into a large amount, maybe it's a good idea to put it to work in your dream business right now, before it slowly fritters away. 6. Creative FinanceGet yourself a decent business plan, and show it around. A friend, co-worker, even a client may become interested enough to finance your start. If your plan is solid, they will quickly see any benefit in it for them to help you. 7. Network Build a list of people/contacts that may help you, or use your services, in the future. You can start this right now, at the very beginning of your thinking. This list is solid gold. If your new business is in no way competition for your old, your workmates and colleagues may become a wonderful resource in the future. 8. One step at a time I mention this several times throughout this blog. If you don't absolutely need an office right up, then work from home until it becomes viable. Don't tie up all your precious capital in high rents and expensive furniture. These come later. Make sure you have access to funds if there is an unexpected crisis, so you can ride out the storm. 9. NicheAre you creating a niche business? Is it viable that your current employer may even become your first customer? There can be enormous goodwill in a situation like this. 10. Start No matter how small your first step, take it. Don't wait and wait until everything is perfect. Start, and enjoy the richness of being your own boss!
